Queen Mary’s College take on 2,022 miles for Mental Health Awareness

Queen Mary’s College set its sites on an ambitious target to raise awareness of mental health in young adults and students. They took part in the national BRIT Challenge which sees colleges and universities come together to individually try to achieve 2,022 miles with £2,022 worth of sponsorship to raise money for this worthy cause. This was a huge endeavour, but with the recently refurbished leisure facilities on site at QMC, the Wellbeing Team joined forces with the team at QM Sports Centre and the challenge was set.

Cardio was the aim of the game. 2,022 miles over the week commencing 14th February saw students, staff and very enthusiastic members of the Sports Centre clocking every step, kilometre and metre they did and it was tracked and converted into miles. The gym was busy with spin bikes, treadmills, rowing machines, step machines and cross trainers all pounding away to get to the end goal.

The atmosphere throughout the week was electric.  Students were encouraging each other to take part and making mini competitions to see who could bank the most miles. Staff were using their lunch breaks, or PPA time to do a quick run or cycle.  A highlight was seeing Foundation Learning students take part most days, as part of their lessons. One visually impaired Foundation Learning student managed to secure 10 miles, which was an incredible achievement.

On Thursday afternoon the collaborative effort had resulted in 1,724 miles, when the news broke that Storm Eunice was potentially going to close the campus the following day. Everyone ramped up the effort and QMC were able to exceed target a day early, finishing on 2,350 miles.

17th February – Day 4
Despite having to close the College on Friday because of Storm Eunice, we’ve made the miles… 2,350 miles to be precise! Woohoo 🎉
Well done to everyone who participated!

16th February – Day 3
So far we’ve achieved 880 miles! Amazing 🤩 start to the BRIT Challenge.
There is still plenty of time to pop over and add a mile or two at the Sports Centre to help us reach our goal of 2022 miles by the end of Friday!

15th February – Day 2 is underway and we have had a number of students and staff put their miles in.
Yesterday we achieved 421 miles! Amazing 🤩 start to the BRIT Challenge.
Here is still plenty of time to pop over and add a mile or two at the Sports Centre.

QMC set its sites on an ambitious target to raise awareness of mental health in young adults and students. They took part in the national BRIT Challenge which sees colleges and universities come together to individually try to achieve 2,022 miles with £2,022 worth of sponsorship to raise money for this worthy cause. This was a huge endeavour, but with the amazing facilities on site at QMC, the Wellbeing Team joined forces with the QM Sports Centre and the challenge was set.

Cardio was the aim of the game. 2,022 miles over the week commencing 14th February saw students, staff and very enthusiastic members of the sports centre clocking every step, kilometre and metre they did and it was tracked and converted by Shellie Rashbrook from the QMC Wellbeing Team and Troy Mack-Mellor from QM Sports Centre. The gym was busy with all the new equipment showing what it was made of… spin bikes, treadmills, rowing machines, step machines and cross trainers all pounding away to get to the end goal.

The atmosphere throughout the week was electric. Students were encouraging each other to take part and making mini competitions to see who could bank the most miles and staff were using their lunch breaks, or PPA time to do a quick run or cycle. A highlight was seeing the Foundation Learning students come over most days, as part of their lesson. One particular student managed to secure 10 miles, which was an incredible achievement.

On Thursday afternoon we were at 1,724 miles, when the news broke that Storm Eunice was potentially going to close the college. So the decision was made to make a huge push to bank as many miles as we could. Thanks to the huge efforts of the sports centre members that evening, we were able to make the target and a little extra finishing on 2,350 miles.

In terms of the sponsorship, we didn’t quite make the £2,022. However, we have raised a substantial amount, which is amazing so well done to everyone who donated and thank you so much for your support.
