Are you interested in a career in the Sports Industry? Are you an aspiring coach or PE teacher? Are you keen to develop your knowledge of fitness and training? If so, the Sport and Physical Activity course could be a great choice for you!

Students on this vocational course will benefit from a significant amount of employer engagement as well as gaining a broad experience within the sports sector, including hands-on coaching, leadership and instructing. This is a demanding, yet rewarding, applied course which is theory and practically based; it requires a high level of organisation and commitment from students. To achieve the qualification students will complete various work based projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. Through the course, students will gain a valuable skill set ready to enter employment in the sports industry or progress to university and employment.

Queen Mary’s College has a fantastic reputation for its sporting programme and team successes. We have a fantastic sports centre, gymnasium and swimming pool available for students to use.

We offer this course as an Extended Diploma which is the equivalent of 3 A-levels and as an Extended Certificate which is the equivalent of 1 A-level.

Where can this course take me?

Throughout the Sport and Physical Activity course you will be challenged to develop a variety of skills such as leadership, coaching, instructing and team work. Assessment will be via a mixture of exams and project based assignments. This will develop high order skills such evaluation, justification and analysis. The course will include two weeks of work experience within the sports sector. This will develop a range of work based skills and will enable you to reflect and action plan towards your future goals. Progression rates into employment and higher education are exceptional as students leave with a comprehensive knowledge and deep understanding of the subject, along with excellent coaching skills that are desired by the sports industry.

This course provides you with a broad qualification that prepares you for further study or a career within the sport sector, including:

  • Sport and Recreation Facility Management
  • Coaching/Teaching/Training
  • Health Promotion
  • Sports Therapy
  • Fitness and Personal Training
  • Sports Development Officer

Here are some example of previous students’ destinations upon leaving QMC:

  • Amber came from Aldworth School and played Basketball for the college. She achieved D*D*D* overall and is now at the University of Chichester studying Sports Therapy.
  • Tom played Rugby and officiated for the college, as well as studying a Cambridge Technical Level 3 Extended Diploma. Following a really successful work experience, he has gone on to be an apprentice Sports Coach and is delivering PE lessons in local primary schools.

Many of our sport students go on to work in unrelated fields but the course develops a range of transferable skills that are valued by local employers.

Alongside with your A Levels and vocational courses, QMC is the only college in the local area where you can qualify as a;
– Personal trainer
– Sports Coach
– Lifeguard

Personal Trainer
By the end of your first year you will be a fully qualified fitness instructor and ready to find part-time work in local fitness centres. By the end of your second year you will be a fully qualified personal trainer able to work in local fitness centres or with your own private clients. You will study for the qualifications one period a week and it fits easily onto your timetable.
(Cost £275. If you were to take this course with a private organisation it costs between £1500 and £2500)

Sports Coach
By the end of your first year you will have a Level 2 Qualification in Community Sports Leadership and will be able to find part-time work coaching in schools and the local community. By the end of the second year you will have a Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Multi-Skills Development in Sport and will be able to coach independently. You will study for the qualifications one period a week and it fits easily onto your timetable.

Life Guarding & First Aid
You will study for the qualifications one period a week and it fits easily onto your timetable. After you qualify you will be able to find part-time work in local leisure centres.

Duke of Edinburgh Award, Silver and Gold
It offers a life-changing experience and a fun time with friends. It is an opportunity to discover new interests and talents and a tool to develop essential skills for life and work. It is a recognised mark of achievement; respected by universities and employers.
