A Levels (Advanced Levels) are subject-based qualifications typically studied over two years. They are academic courses that prepare students for university, apprenticeships, or employment.

How many A Levels should I take?

Most students take three A Levels, as this is the standard requirement for university entry. Some students supplement their programme of study by taking an additional qualification, such as the Extended Project Qualification (EOQ), Core Maths AS Level or Music AS Level, each being equivalent to an additional half an A Level and providing additional UCAS points.

How are A Levels assessed?

A Levels are assessed primarily through exams at the end of the two-year course.

Can I combine A Level subjects?

Yes, you can choose a combination of A Level subjects that align with your interests and career goals. For example, students aiming for a medical degree often take Biology, Chemistry, and Maths. Students can also combine A Level and vocational course options.

What grades do I need to take A Levels?

Entry requirements vary by college or sixth form, but typically, you’ll need at least five GCSEs at grades 4–9 (including English and Maths). Some A Level subjects may require specific GCSE grades. For courses at Queen Mary’s College these are listed in the Prospectus.

Are A Levels necessary for university?

Yes, A Levels are the most common qualification required for university entry in the UK. Universities also recognise vocational qualifications such as BTECs.
