Celebrating Success at QMC’s Sports Award 2024

Team of the Year: Volleyball (Mixed)

Last week, Queen Mary’s College’s Sport and PE Department hosted its much-anticipated annual Sports Award ceremony, a celebration of student achievements in various sports categories. This event honours the hard work, dedication, and remarkable performances of students across a wide range of sports, highlighting their contributions to the college’s athletic success.

As well as Team of the Year, Sportswoman of the Year and Sportsman of the Year, awards for each sport team are as follows: Coaches’ Player, Most Improved Player, and the prestigious, Players’ Player.

Team of the Year: Volleyball

This year’s Team of the Year award was won by the Volleyball team (mixed). Over the past three years, the team has demonstrated exceptional prowess and consistency, making it to the finals of the AOC Regional competition and excelling in the AOC Southeast League. A special shout out goes to Max Norton, whose enthusiasm and exemplary coaching have been pivotal to the team’s success.

Sportswoman of the Year: Ella Baron

Ella Baron was honoured as the Sportswoman of the Year for her outstanding contributions to netball, volleyball, and touch rugby. Her dedication and skill were further recognized as she also received the Netball Players’ Player of the Year award. The competition for this title was fierce, with Emily Labrooy earning an honourable mention for her excellent performances in rugby, football, and basketball.

Sportsman of the Year: Matt Fischedick

Matt Fischedick took home the Sportsman of the Year award, celebrated for his role as the football team’s goalkeeper and his efforts as a football ambassador during his time at the college. Matt’s versatility and commitment has been outstanding with him actively promoting sports both on and off the field at QMC.

  • Coaches’ Player of the Season: Maz Bennett
  • Most Improved Player: Layne Collins
  • Players’ Player of the Season: Maz Bennett

Basketball (Womens)

  • Coaches’ Player of the Season: Macy Connolly
  • Most Improved Player: Megan Dacosta
  • Players’ Player of the Season: Emily Labrooy, Alexa Nash and Adauwa Mojekwu

Football (Men’s)

  • Most Improved Player: Renaldo Narcisse
  • Players’ Player of the Season: Cameron Benzeval

Tennis

  • Coaches’ Player of the Season: Dan Ward
  • Most Improved Player: Fraser Barnett

The awards were presented by Principal Mark Henderson, who was joined by team coaches and the Head of Sport and PE, Andrew Fields, in congratulating the winners. The ceremony was preceded by a spirited inter-team dodgeball tournament, adding an extra layer of excitement to this year’s event. The men’s rugby team emerged victorious, maintaining their unbeaten streak and showcasing their competitive edge.
