We offer this course as a Diploma, which is the equivalent of 2 A-levels and as an Extended Certificate which is the equivalent of 1 A-level.

Are you considering a career in the sports industry? Are you interested in performance analysis? Are you curious about the body systems and their response to exercise? Are you motivated to explore how the mind might affect performance? If so, this course could be a great choice for you.

Through this programme, students gain a valuable high order skillset ready to enter higher education, or progress directly into employment. Students will benefit from a significant amount of employer engagement as well as gaining a broad experience within the sports sector, particularly in terms of fitness testing and training, health screening and technology. Students will also complete an independent research project. To achieve the qualification students will complete various work-based projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. There are also four externally set examinations in Anatomy, Physiology, Psychology and Nutrition.

We offer the BTEC Sport and Exercise Science course as a Diploma (2 A level equivalent) or as an Extended certificate (1 A level equivalent).

Most students study for a personal training, coaching, lifeguard and first-aid qualification alongside their diploma.

L3 Sport Exercise Science - Single and Double

Course Summary

Students will study a variety of concepts associated with Sport and Exercise Science, particularly in terms of physiology, psychology, fitness testing, specialised training and health screening. Students will also complete an independent research project in the second year.

In the double diploma (2 A level equivalent) students will study 8 units, three of which are externally assessed by exam. The remaining five are coursework based.

In the single diploma (1 A level equivalent) students will study four units, two of which are externally assessed by exam. The remaining two are coursework based.

 

 

Specific Entry Requirements

Standard Entry Requirements. Grade 5 in Science. Grade 4 GCSE English and Maths.
Grade 4 GCSE P. E. or equivalent is beneficial but not essential.

Matt Coleman – is now studying for a degree in Aviation and Airline Management at Birmingham University.

Sam Weller – is now studying for a degree in Sports Management at Bournemouth University.

Sam Hayes is an apprentice police constable with Hampshire Constabulary

How is the course assessed?

In the double diploma (2 A level equivalent) students will study 8 units, three of which are externally assessed by exam. The remaining five are coursework based.

In the single diploma (1 A level equivalent) students will study four units, two of which are externally assessed by exam. The remaining two are coursework based

  • Current Issues including the business and sociology of sport
  • Research Project in Sport Programming Programming

Will I need specialist materials or equipment?

You will need sports kit for all practical based lessons. An online text book will be available to support your understanding of key concepts.

Personal Trainer
By the end of your first year you will be a fully qualified fitness instructor and ready to find part-time work in local fitness centres. By the end of your second year you will be a fully qualified personal trainer able to work in local fitness centres or with your own private clients. You will study for the qualifications one period a week and it fits easily onto your timetable.
(Cost £225. If you were to take this course with a private organisation it costs between £1500 and £2500)

Sports Coach
By the end of your first year you will have a Level 2 Level 2 Qualification in Community Sports Leadership and will be able to find part-time work coaching in schools and the local community. By the end of the second year you will have a Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Multi-Skills Development in Sport and will be able to coach independently. You will study for the qualifications one period a week and it fits easily onto your timetable.

Life Guarding & First Aid
You will study for the qualifications one period a week and it fits easily onto your timetable. After you qualify you will be able to find part-time work in local leisure centres.

Duke of Edinburgh Award, Silver and Gold
It offers a life-changing experience and a fun time with friends. It is an opportunity to discover new interests and talents and a tool to develop essential skills for life and work. It is a recognised mark of achievement; respected by universities and employers.
