Maths A Level

Maths A Level

Course Overview

The two-year Mathematics A Level course focuses on developing strong analytical and problem-solving skills that are essential for success in a wide range of disciplines.

You will study key areas of pure mathematics, including algebra, graphs, functions, trigonometry, and calculus, while also applying mathematical principles through statistics and mechanics. This combination allows you to explore both theoretical and practical aspects of mathematics, enhancing your ability to interpret data, construct logical arguments, and model real-world situations.

The course is designed to strengthen your logical thinking, precision, and analytical reasoning, providing a solid foundation for further study and future careers in STEM, finance, and data-driven industries.

What Topics Will I Study?

The Mathematics A Level builds on your GCSE knowledge and introduces a deeper, more rigorous exploration of mathematical theory and its practical applications. You will learn to interpret data, construct proofs, and model real-world situations using mathematical equations.

The course follows the Edexcel specification, comprising two-thirds pure mathematics and one-third applied mathematics (mechanics and statistics).

Year One

  • Strengthen your understanding of algebra, graphs, and functions.
  • Study trigonometry, calculus, and mathematical proof.
  • Apply mathematical concepts to real-world situations through mechanics and statistics.

Year Two

  • Continue to develop advanced algebraic and analytical skills.
  • Statistics: Explore data analysis, correlation, probability, hypothesis testing, and frequency distributions.
  • Mechanics: Study forces and motion, using mathematical modelling to predict how objects move in response to external forces.

This balanced approach ensures a strong foundation in both theoretical and applied mathematics, preparing you for further study and professional applications.

How Will I be Assessed?

You will complete three written examinations, each lasting two hours and worth 100 marks:

  • Paper 1: Pure Mathematics 1
  • Paper 2: Pure Mathematics 2
  • Paper 3: Applied Mathematics (Statistics and Mechanics)

All exams are equally weighted and take place at the end of the second year.

Entry Requirements

To study A Level Mathematics, you’ll need:

  • Five or more GCSEs at grade 4/5 or above, including English Language.
  • A minimum of grade 7 in GCSE Mathematics (grade 6 may be considered on an individual basis).

This course is ideal for students who enjoy solving problems, working methodically, and exploring the connections between mathematics and the real world.

Future Pathways

Mathematics A Level is a respected and versatile qualification that supports progression into many degree subjects and careers, including:

  • Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, and Economics
  • Finance, Accountancy, Data Science, Architecture, and Research

Mathematical qualifications are linked to higher earning potential and are consistently in demand across a wide range of industries.

Enrichment Opportunities

Students studying A Level Mathematics are encouraged to participate in a variety of activities designed to extend and enrich their learning.

Opportunities include:

  • UK Senior Maths Challenge and Senior Kangaroo Challenge
  • Rotary Club Technology Challenge
  • Maths in Action conferences and guest lectures by industry professionals
  • Access to the Maths Workshop, daily drop-in sessions offering guidance and homework support

These experiences help build confidence, develop teamwork and communication skills, and connect mathematical learning to real-world contexts.

A Level Maths FAQs

How are lessons structured?

You will have three 100-minute lessons per week, taught by the same specialist teacher throughout the two-year course. This provides consistency and support as you progress through the syllabus.

What equipment will I need?

  • You’ll receive digital access to Pearson-published textbooks used during the course.
  • A scientific or graphical calculator is required. You can purchase one through the college at a discounted rate once you start your course.
  • Essential stationery such as lined paper, a ruler, and an eraser will be needed, all available to purchase from the QMC Resources Shop.

There’s no need to buy any equipment before the course begins; full details will be provided during induction.

What is the difference between A Level Maths and Double Maths?

A Level Mathematics is a single A Level qualification covering pure and applied maths.
Double Mathematics is a more advanced, two-A-Level course (Mathematics and Further Mathematics) designed for students planning to study Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, or other competitive STEM subjects at university.

Double Maths students typically take four A Levels, including both Maths and Further Maths.

What support is available?

QMC’s Maths Department provides extensive academic support:

  • All lessons are taught by qualified maths specialists.
  • Access to a daily drop-in Maths Workshop for homework and revision help.
  • A wide range of online practice resources and worked examples for independent study.

Students are encouraged to seek help whenever needed, support is always available.

What homework can I expect?

Homework is assigned via Google Classroom and forms an essential part of your learning. You should expect to spend around five hours per week on maths practice outside of lessons.

This includes both set assignments and additional revision or practice. Regular independent study is key to exam success, the more you practise, the more confident and prepared you’ll be.
