National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ)
This course provides an industry recognised qualification which covers a range of pool rescue techniques, lifeguarding theory, first aid and CPR. You will develop confidence in a pool based setting and when dealing with a range of water based emergencies. Throughout the course you will gain significant knowledge and understanding in administering first aid and will therefore also be accredited with a Level 3 First Aid at Work. This qualification is a minimum requirement for securing employment in a leisure environment as a qualified pool lifeguard. You will need to be a relatively strong swimmer.

SPORT LEVEL 2 and Level 3 DIPLOMA IN PERSONAL TRAINING
Queen Mary’s College is the only college in the local area where you can qualify as a personal trainer alongside your studies.
Through this course, students will continue to learn and become confident in the principles of gym instruction catering for a variety of client needs on a 1-1 basis. Important elements such as Anatomy and Physiology, Nutrition and running your own business as a Personal trainer will form a significant part of this course. Successful completion of this qualification entitles you to work unsupervised with clients in a Personal Trainer capacity. Ideally suited for those students potentially considering working in the fitness industry as an Instructor/ Personal Trainer. Students do not need to be studying academic sport to complete this course.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S AWARD
This course offers you a non-competitive programme of practical, cultural and adventurous activities designed to support the personal and social development of young people. This enrichment will take place outside normal lesson time and the final expeditions will be organised through the Sport & PE Department.
First Aid
This course offers students to become a qualified first-aider.
EXTENDED PROJECT QUALIFICATION (EPQ)
Available in all subjects the Extended Project offers an opportunity to carry out a research project or activity in an area of your own choice. The choice can be based on a topic you have a personal interest in or linked to something you have studied but would like to research more thoroughly. EPQ is designed to develop skills as an independent learner. Delivery of the EPQ involves taught sessions, supervision and assessment of progress. It will involve extended, autonomous work. You will be expected to: Select an area of interest Draft a title and project aims to be approved by a supervisor and the coordinator Plan, research and carry out the project Deliver a presentation to a specified audience Provide evidence of all stages of project development and production for assessment (online log)
PERSPECTIVES ON SCIENCE (EPQ)
Available as part of the High Achievers’ Package, this course explores the history, philosophy and ethics of science. You will think critically about the nature of science and its contribution to current world views. You will develop your research, thinking and presentation skills in the exploration of such fundamental questions as the origins of the universe or the beginning and ending of life. Assessed as an EPQ, this course will be particularly valuable if you are applying for medicine and veterinary courses or science at the top universities.
