Further Mathematics AS Level

Further Mathematics AS Level

Course Overview

The Further Mathematics AS Level is designed for second-year students pursuing three A Levels who wish to extend and deepen their mathematical knowledge. This one-year course is studied alongside A Level Mathematics and provides an opportunity to explore advanced topics beyond the standard A Level syllabus.

The course offers an intensive exploration of higher-level mathematical concepts, including Complex Numbers, Matrices, and advanced algebraic and graphical methods. You will also expand your understanding of mechanics and decision mathematics, developing problem-solving skills that are invaluable in science, engineering, and technology-based disciplines.

Studying Further Mathematics AS Level not only enhances your analytical and logical thinking skills but also contributes additional UCAS points, strengthening your university applications. This qualification is particularly valuable for students intending to progress to degree programmes in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, or Computer Science, and is highly regarded for other science-related subjects.

What Topics Will I Study?

Under the guidance of QMC’s experienced Mathematics faculty, you will study a curriculum that balances both pure and applied mathematical components:

  • Pure Mathematics (50%) – Extend your knowledge of algebra, functions, and calculus through the study of topics such as Complex Numbers, Matrices, and Further Graphs and Equations.
  • Applied Mathematics (50%) – Explore mechanics, including energy, motion, and momentum, alongside decision mathematics, covering networks, algorithms, and optimisation techniques.

Throughout the course, you will develop precision, logical reasoning, and problem-solving ability essential skills for academic and professional success.

Enrichment Opportunities

Students studying Mathematics at QMC benefit from a wide range of enrichment experiences. You may participate in national competitions such as the UK Senior Maths Challenge, Maths Olympiad, and Rotary Club Technology Challenge, or attend offsite events like Maths in Action, which brings mathematical theory to life.

The Maths Workshop provides daily drop-in sessions for academic support and collaborative learning. Additionally, dedicated preparation classes are available for university entrance tests such as STEP, MAT, and TMUA, ensuring students are well-prepared for future academic challenges.
