Core Mathematics AS Level

Core Mathematics AS Level

Course Overview

Core Mathematics (AS Level) is a practical, problem-solving qualification designed to build on the skills developed at GCSE. It is particularly beneficial for students studying A Levels that include some mathematical or statistical elements, such as Geography, Economics, Psychology, Business, and the Sciences.

This one-year course runs alongside your A Level programme and offers a valuable opportunity to strengthen your analytical and quantitative skills while earning additional UCAS points. Recognised by universities and employers, the qualification is equivalent to 40% of a full A Level, demonstrating your ability to manage a comprehensive programme of study and a mathematical proficiency that extends beyond GCSE level.

Please note: Core Mathematics AS Level is only available to students who are not taking A Level Mathematics.

What Topics Will I Study?

Core Mathematics AS Level emphasises understanding, application, and reasoning over rote calculation. You will study topics such as:

Problem Solving

Develop the ability to interpret complex questions, select suitable techniques, and reach accurate, logical conclusions. Strengthen your decision-making and critical thinking skills through applied problem scenarios.

Analysis

Learn to interpret technical information in multiple formats including tables, graphs, and diagrams and understand how algebra can generalise relationships and patterns.

Estimation

Gain the confidence to make informed estimations from limited data, applying assumptions and formulas to predict outcomes in uncertain conditions.

Independence and Organisation

Enhance your self-reliance by tackling challenges independently, managing your workload effectively, and selecting appropriate resources. Develop time management strategies that support success in both exams and future study.

How Will I be Assessed?

Exam Board: AQA

The course is assessed through two written examinations, each lasting 1 hour and 30 minutes, held in May.

Assessment questions are based on data sources provided six weeks in advance, allowing you to apply mathematical and analytical techniques to authentic, real-world contexts. This well-established AQA qualification ensures a rigorous and comprehensive learning experience that prepares you for both academic and professional success.

Entry Requirements

To study Core Mathematics AS Level, you will need:

  • Five or more GCSEs at grade 4/5 or above, including English Language.
  • GCSE Mathematics at grade 5 or higher is required.

This course is ideal for students seeking to enhance their mathematical confidence and analytical skills while studying A Levels that involve quantitative elements.

Students studying Core Mathematics AS Level at Queen Mary’s College benefit from a range of opportunities that extend learning beyond the classroom. You can learn more about enrichment opportunities here.

Future Opportunities

Core Mathematics AS Level strengthens your ability to apply mathematical reasoning to real-world problems a skill highly valued by universities and employers alike.

By developing proficiency in data analysis, interpretation, and financial literacy, this course supports progression to a wide range of degree subjects, including Geography, Business, Psychology, Environmental Science, and Economics, as well as careers requiring strong numeracy and problem-solving abilities.

Mathematical qualifications are consistently linked to enhanced employability and earning potential, making Core Maths an excellent addition to your academic portfolio.
