What Topics Will I Study?

The course incorporates both A Level Mathematics and A Level Further Mathematics, offering a broad and in-depth exploration of advanced mathematical theory and its real-world applications.

Pure Mathematics

Explore the beauty and complexity of mathematical structures through topics such as:

  • Matrices and Complex Numbers
  • Differential Equations and Calculus
  • Proof, Algebra, and Trigonometry

Applied Mathematics

Discover how mathematical principles explain the world around us:

  • Mechanics – motion, forces, energy, and Newton’s laws
  • Statistics – probability, data analysis, and modelling real-world situations
  • Decision Mathematics – algorithms, optimisation, and problem-solving techniques

Taught by QMC’s experienced Mathematics faculty, the course includes ten hours of engaging instruction per week, providing the depth and support needed for success.

What Skills Will I Develop?

Through the Double Mathematics A Level, you’ll develop a wide range of transferable skills that are valued by universities and employers alike:

  • Problem Solving: Tackle complex challenges and apply techniques to find accurate solutions.
  • Logical Reasoning: Build structured, logical arguments and validate results through mathematical proof.
  • Analysis: Break down intricate problems and interpret data from graphs, charts, and tables.
  • Communication: Express ideas clearly using precise mathematical language.
  • Teamwork: Collaborate with peers to discuss and solve challenging problems.
  • Resilience: Build perseverance and confidence when facing difficult questions.
  • Organisation: Manage your workload effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Independence: Strengthen your ability to work through problems confidently on your own.

These skills not only support success in mathematics but also in a wide variety of professional and academic settings.

How Will I be Assessed?

Assessment Method: 100% examination

  • Mathematics A Level: Two-thirds pure mathematics (algebra, calculus) and one-third applied mathematics (mechanics and statistics).
  • Further Mathematics A Level: 50% pure mathematics and 50% further mechanics and decision mathematics.

This comprehensive structure, supported by Pearson-published resources, ensures a rigorous and well-rounded mathematical education that prepares students for excellence in their final exams.
