What Topics Will I Study?

The Holy Wars – The Age of Crusades (c.1071–1204)

Uncover the dramatic clash between the Muslim East and Christian West, driven by faith, power, and politics.

  • Explore the causes and motives behind the first four Crusades.
  • Examine key events and leaders who shaped the conflict.
  • Analyse the long-term consequences and legacy of these wars.

The Tudor Dynasty (c.1529–1570)

Trace England’s transformation under Henry VIII and his successors, a period defined by religious and political upheaval.

  • Understand the break from the Roman Catholic Church and the birth of the Church of England.
  • Evaluate how Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I pursued religious change.
  • Assess the success and impact of each monarch’s reforms on English society.

Exploration and Discovery (c.1445–1545) – Coursework Module

Investigate the Age of Exploration and its impact on global history.

  • Study the rise of Spanish and Portuguese empires and explorers such as Christopher Columbus.
  • Examine the conquest of the Aztec and Inca Empires.
  • Explore the origins of the transatlantic slave trade and its historical significance.

How Will I be Assessed?

Your final grade is based on:

  • 80% Examination – testing your knowledge, understanding, and written analysis.
  • 20% Coursework – a research-based project on exploration and discovery.

This balance of exams and independent study helps develop both analytical and self-management skills, preparing you for the demands of university-level study and the workplace.

What are the Entry Requirements?

To study Medieval and Tudor History A Level, you’ll need:

  • Five or more GCSEs at grade 4/5 or above, including:
    • English Language
    • Either English Literature or History
