On January 20th, Queen Mary’s College celebrated becoming the first educational facility in Hampshire to be established as a third-party hate crime reporting hub.
A third-party hate crime reporting hub allows victims to report hate crimes and incidents without needing to go directly to the police. QMC will act as an independent organisation, providing support to victims by assisting them in submitting reports or making a report on their behalf.
Members of QMC’s Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) team have been trained by the police to:
- Recognise hate crime
- Serve as ‘go-to’ safe contacts for students who have experienced it
- Gather relevant data to help the police identify key concerns in Hampshire.
Mark Henderson, Principal and CEO of QMC, commented: “It makes me feel very proud of everybody at Queen Mary’s College. Finding ways to overcome the barriers to reporting hate crime can be life-changing and, in some cases, life-saving.”
In an ever-changing world, QMC remains committed to ensuring the college is a safe and inclusive place for all. As Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion continues to evolve, QMC evolves with it. The college’s EDI initiatives are brought to life through the hard work and dedication of its EDI staff and student committees.
