The Behind Bars conference returned to Queen Mary’s College on Tuesday and yet again proved to be an invaluable and rare opportunity for students studying subjects such as psychology, sociology and law. Through presentations and discussions with ex-prisoners, students were able to reflect and challenge their own thoughts and stereotypes.
During the conference prisoners spoke about their individual experiences of prison life as well as their crime and prison journey. Students relished the opportunity to speak with those who have served prison sentences for a range of different criminal offences and were able to expand their knowledge of the criminal justice system in practice.
Teacher of Psychology Katherine Bejide said "Behind Bars is a fantastic event that allows students to see the individuals behind criminal behaviour and think about how to improve rehabilitation and prison life and prevent reoffending."
