Science GCSE students experiment at QMC!
On Monday 16th January, GCSE students spent the morning in the QMC Science labs carrying out experiments to help them prepare for their exams.
The Year 11 students, from The Clere School in Burghclere, are all taking triple Science at GCSE and are busy revising for their forthcoming exams. With a reputation for excellence in Science, they took the opportunity to spend the morning with the Science department, undertaking experiments to aid with their revision and to give them a taste of studying Science at College.
The students were tasked with a ‘clock reaction’ experiment. Alex Mace and Sam Lomas-Bower, who have both applied to QMC for September, were paired together for the session and Alex explained what they were doing: “We’re mixing chemicals together with the aim of creating a blue solution within one minute. We’ve managed to create a dark blue solution but not within the time period so now we need to work out how to speed the reaction up.” Sam, who has applied to study both Chemistry and Physics at QMC next year, commented “It’s been great to come up to QMC to do some experiments, I've really enjoyed it."
The Head of Science at The Clere, Matt Parker, who accompanied the students on their trip said: “They’ve got their Chemistry and Physics exams in a couple of weeks time so this is a great opportunity for them to take a break from revising in school, and revise in a hands-on way in a different environment. It’s got them motivated and as most of these students are hoping
to study science subjects at AS Level after they leave school, it gives them a real taste of what science lessons at College will be like.”
