Medals all round for QMC students in the British Colleges National Finals!
Ten QMC students took part in the British Colleges Sports National Finals at Bath University on 9th April, and all ten walked away with a medal!
The 33rd Annual British Colleges Championships, which was being held at Bath for the first time after 8 years at Loughborough, saw students representing nine regions compete across fourteen sports. The facilities at the University, and the weather, made for a great setting and a memorable weekend of sport.
The ten QMC students taking part had qualified for the event via the South East regional competitions which took place before Christmas. They were representing five sports which included Tennis, Cross Country, Trampolining, Table Tennis and Women’s Rugby. There were some great matches and races across the weekend and all ten QMC students came away with a medal – an amazing achievement considering the range of sports and level of competition they were participating in. The medals gained were:
Cross Country Regional Team Gold medal: Tom Watson, Chris Ladhams and Darren Carr – the boys competed in a 7.5km race against a large field of runners in some fairly hot weather! Tom was our highest placed runner, finishing in a fantastic 9th place.
Trampolining (Novice) Regional Team Gold medal: Charlotte Tyler and Abbie McCombe. Both girls performed well across their voluntary and compulsory routines, with Abbi just missing out on an individual medal as she finished fourth.
Women’s Rugby Regional Team Silver medal: Lisa Cockburn was the sole representative from QMC in the South East Rugby team and played in every match against some tough opposition. The gold medal went to the unbeaten Wales region.
Women’s Doubles Table Tennis Silver medal: Manorama Ghale and Devi Kandangwa. The girls only lost one match in this competition to the eventual winners and thoroughly enjoyed the tournament. They are already planning their practice to try and gain the gold medal next year!
Men’s Doubles Tennis Silver medal: Ben Jubin and Jack Nicholson. The boys had some emphatic wins over 5 of the 6 regional teams but were unable to play their best tennis against the eventual gold medal winners from the North East. The highlight of the tournament was unquestionably Jack’s spectacular through the legs winner on match point against the East Midlands which earned him a huge cheer from the large crowd!
