Governors report

It is always an exciting time when new buildings open, ribbons are cut, speeches made and a sense of purpose reaffirmed. We have enjoyed a number of such moments over the last few years and the completion of the Art and IT block for use in September 2006 was particularly significant. It marked another step forward in the Governors’ continuing programme to make QMC one of the best equipped sixth form Colleges in England.

The undeniable physicality of a new building makes it impossible not to notice or remark on as a milestone in our development. It is much easier to miss the other, just as significant, developments and innovations that go to create a good college and without which the finest buildings in the world would be meaningless shells. It is a fascinating fact that, at a time when splendid new buildings are at their most obvious and plentiful on the college site, students reporting their experiences hardly ever mention them. This is right of course. They view their time at the college in a highly subjective fashion, aware of their experience of being a student and the individual journey they are undertaking.

There are many elements that go to make QMC an effective learning environment, the most important without doubt being the quality of the staffing. The Governors in this short report have chosen, wisely we think, to focus on the major developments in teaching and support for students that have taken place and which deserve celebration. The buildings speak for themselves.
