Free-Standing Maths Qualifications (FSMQ)

FSMQs are designed to appeal to students who would like to take their mathematics beyond GCSE but would not want to commit themselves to a full AS course. Each FSMQ carries the same UCAS points as an AS module. We offer 3 types of FSMQ each comprising 2 hours of teaching per week.

Using and applying statistics
This course is designed to have wide appeal across all subject areas, allowing many students to integrate
work from their other studies.
Students:
  • develop a critical approach to the use of statistics in the real world

  • learn about statistical measures and diagrams

  • develop an understanding of key ideas involving the distribution of data, correlation and regression

  • report on investigations they carry out.

Working with algebraic and graphical techniques
This course is likely to appeal to students who currently study advanced science/technology courses but who currently do not study mathematics as well. They can also be used by students studying other subjects such as Economics.
Students:
  • model their own data with appropriate functions

  • investigate functions commonly used to model real situations using graphing and analytical techniques.

Using and applying decision mathematics
This course is likely to prove useful to students studying a wide range of courses, including Business/Economics; Travel and Tourism, IT and Humanities.
Students:
  • learn how networks can be used to solve a wide range of problems in the real world

  • learn about algorithms and develop an understanding of how they can be used in modelling in practical situations

A student could complete 1 or 2 FSMQs or, by adding the Applying Mathematics Module, complete an AS Use of Mathematics in their second year.
